Bulgaria Will Open Airspace for Putin

(MENAFN) Bulgaria has expressed its willingness to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin's aircraft to enter its airspace if he chooses to travel to Budapest, Hungary, for a potential meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, who made the announcement on Monday.

During a press briefing at an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, Georgiev clarified that logistical arrangements for such a visit would only be discussed once the Trump-Putin summit is officially confirmed.

"Let the date be announced first, and then we can talk about technical details. As far as I know, there is no confirmed date yet," he stated, as reported by a news agency.

Georgiev further emphasized that Bulgaria would not obstruct any diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing peace to Ukraine.

"When efforts are made for peace, it is only logical that all sides contribute to making such a meeting possible," he commented. "How else could the meeting take place if one of the participants cannot get there?"

In addition, Georgiev reaffirmed Bulgaria's support for the European Union's 19th sanctions package against Russia, which is anticipated to be finalized later this week.

The package includes discussions on imposing further tariffs on Russian goods. While there are still hopes for lasting peace in Ukraine, Georgiev noted that Russia's actions continue to show hostility.

On the topic of the so-called "shadow fleet" of Russian oil tankers operating in the Black Sea, Georgiev remarked: "Russian activity in this direction is significant. We are working with Romania and Türkiye through our mine clearance group, and all movements in this area are under increased surveillance."
